We've recently had a request for information on how to change this, so I figured I'd share it on the forum. Have you ever downloaded something and the browser just dumps it in the Downloads folder, and you then have to move it to where you wanted it to go in the first place? Conversely, some of you would probably like having all downloads dumped in the central Downloads folder, however the browser insists on asking for the specific location each and every time you download an unimportant cat meme that your cousin sent you.
It's easy to fix either of these perspectives.
Firefox Browser
- At the very top right of the window under the X to close the window, click on the button with 3 horizontal lines (some people call it the "hamburger button").2) In the drop down menu click Options (has an image of a gear).3) Under "General" there's a Downloads sub-header where you can either select the default "Downloads" folder slated under your User file in Windows, or you can select the alternate radial button that allows you to choose the location each and every time you download.
Chrome Browser
- At the very top right of the window under the X to close the window, click on the vertical 3 dot pattern, then Settings.2) In the Settings menu, scroll down to the bottom and click on "Show advanced settings..." then scroll down to Downloads and select the check box beside "Ask where to save each file before downloading" if that is your preference. Otherwise you can leave it blank and click the change button to decide where your downloads should be stored automatically.
Microsoft Edge
- You might be seeing a trend here, but once again click on the button in the top right that looks like an ellipses (three horizontal dots).2) Scroll down to Advanced settings and select "View advanced settings".3) Then scroll down to Downloads, where you can both specify a folder for downloads to empty into, and toggle whether or not Edge asks you what to do with each download.
If you happen to use a different browser and need help, be sure to let us know.
