Getting Started

You’re likely here because you now own a PC from Computers for Schools Yukon, but this knowledge is available for anyone who is interested, so feel free to share the link, and we encourage you to contact us with any questions you have so we can expand the documentation we have here.

We don’t like getting you trapped into subscription services when there’s alternatives that work well that are free, so instead of Microsoft Office, we’ve installed Libre Office. It doesn’t look exactly the same, but has much of the same functionality, can save in Microsoft formats, and doesn’t cost a cent because it’s an Open Source project. OnlyOffice is another project that doesn’t cost anything and works great if you’re looking for an alternative.

For security, we’ve relied on Windows Security (also called Defender) which is the built in security within Windows 10. It’s pretty great at keeping a computer safe while connected to the internet as it uses Microsoft servers to recognize threats on the system. It isn’t great at keeping you safe if you open downloaded files while not connected to the internet though, so if you’re in that kind of situation a fair bit (such as when on a flight) you may want to download Bitdefender or Kaspersky which have free versions that still work great. For more information on this, you can click on the Windows 10 Security link above.

We have Zoom installed, which is great for meeting with people online, but for us it helps for if you have problems with your computer that we’re not easily able to guide you through to a solution, we can meet with you in Zoom to see what’s happening a lot easier. Some of you may have covid concerns, so we want to be as accommodating as possible to support our community.

Speaking of our community, if you’d like to have better access to our attention, or just chat with other people in our community, we have Discord available. It allows you to ask questions where any of our staff, some past staff members, or knowledgeable community members can assist you. You can also share a picture of your cat, or a video of you attempting to juggle in the off-topic channel. The invite link to our server is below.

Feel free to contact us with any questions you have. You’ll be doing us a favour because it’s easier to expand our documentation that way.
